Prom Night Information

Prom season is upon us.  United Parent Council wants to make sure your children are safe and supervised on this important night.  In addition to the information below, please check out two other articles we have received permission to post on our web site: Senior Prom Safety for Teens and Prom Safety Tips. All of this is important information parents need to know.

Hotel/Motel Room Rental

1.                 According to Arizona statute, a parents or legal guardians having custody or control of minors are liable for injury to person(s) or property of another, up to $10,000, for any malicious or willful misconduct of the minor.

2.                 If a parent has any knowledge that students under the age of 18 may be engaging in sexual activity or consuming alcohol, and someone is injured, that parent may be liable for damage to the injured person(s).

3.                 If an adult, which includes children 18 years and older, rent a hotel or motel room and there is any damage, there is no dollar limit for liability.

4.                 Whoever rents the hotel room is responsible for damages caused by their guests in the room.

Minor in Possession of Alcohol

1.                 It is unlawful for a person under the age of 21 years to buy, receive, have in possession, or consume spirituous liquor.

2.                 A minor may be cited if he/she is knowingly and willingly in the proximity of alcoholic beverages.  This means even if the minor has not consumed any alcohol.

Limousine Services

There are many reputable limousine services in the Valley.  However, please be aware that the industry is unregulated.  Some drivers may operate their vehicles while under the influence of alcohol, may offer alcohol to teens, or may bring a companion with them when teens are in the car.

What Can You Do As A Parent?

1.                 Discuss with your child what his/her plans are for prom night.

2.                 Know where he/she is going.

3.                 Discuss with your child the laws related to curfew, alcohol/drug consumption, sexual activity, and safe driving.

4.                 Before hiring a limousine service, inquire about its policies.  Speak to the limo driver and communicate your expectations regarding teen behavior in the vehicle.

5.                 Consider offering your home or a community center with supervision for after-prom activities.  Maybe you could go in with a couple of other parents to share expenses and supervision.

6.                 Provide your child with phone numbers where you can be reached throughout the evening and night.

7.                 Talk to the parents of your children's friends before the big night to confirm plans, affirm your desires for the evening's entertainment, and lend much needed support.

It isn't easy being the parent of a teen, but remember you are not alone!
